Evans Orchard Field Trip and Weekly announcements

Hello families!
We are moving into a busy week at Wellington!  This week we are learning about pets and how we take care of those special friends.  We are also continuing to grow as readers working on skills to help us decode words.  Please continue to read at home to help students work on decoding.  Today we learned about "chunking" our words and if we know the word 'an' we can read the words like 'span' 'grand' and 'hand'.

In our pictures below students were working on "one to one" reading, making sure we are tracking our words.  We have special reading fingers to help us slow down when we are reading!

Our spelling words for the week:
pull
glad
come
plan
flag
slip
flip
blip

Our sight words for the week:
be
good
pull
come

Our sight words are important to help us become better readers! We practice these each day at school by finding the word in a sentence, writing the word in the air and sometimes writing the word with our bodies!  Students also practice through word work and work on writing activities using the words in sentences.

Reminders for the week:
Wednesday is GRANDPARENTS day!  If students have family that is coming for lunch please let them know to come at 10:30, we will do a special activity with our families at that time, then students can go to lunch at 11.  If they do go to the book fair with family, I ask that they all be back in our classroom by 11:45 (our lunch is 11:00 -11:25, so hopefully this gives families time to go to the book fair and return to class).

Thursday (September 22) we will be having a Teddy Bear day!  Students are invited to bring with them a stuffed animal that is special to them.  We will be doing activities with our teddy bears throughout the day and our teddy bears will be spending the night at school!!  (Please note this should not be something new, just a stuffed animal special to your student that they would not mind being without for the night!

Our spelling test will be on Friday so practice words each night!

Please read baggie books nightly to practice reading with your student!  Return books on Friday.

We had such a wonderful day Thursday at our field trip!  Evans Orchard was very accommodating and welcoming to our first graders!  Wellington ended up being the only school there on Thursday so we were so lucky for the weather to hold off and the day was great!

We learned about how they pick apples and carefully add them to the conveyor belt for sorting.

Just a few reminders for our field trip TOMORROW!!

Students should wear their blue Wellington t-shirts.  Tomorrow is likely to be rainy so please wear a rain jacket.  An umbrella will be okay as well, but please note students will be walking around and it might be difficult to carry around the farm.

Please wear tennis shoes or rain boots - please no sandals.

We'll have a wonderful day I know it!!

If you are a chaperone volunteer please be at school by 9 to meet with Mrs. Strange in the library for a brief chaperone responsibility review.

Thank you so much! Have a great evening!

September 11-15

God afternoon families!

We started learning about beginning, middle and end of our stories today during reading.  We're learning about our characters and what makes our stories important.  We talked about our ESSENTIAL questions last week and are learning more about where we live and what it is like where we live.

Our field trip is this THURSDAY September 14.  If you are coming as a volunteer thank you!  Mrs. Strange will have a chaperone refresher in the morning at 9:00.  Students should wear their Wellington shirts (blue) so we are all wearing the same shirts.

Wellington's grandparents lunch will be next Wednesday September 20 at 11. Grandparents are welcome to come to our classroom at 10:30 for a craft with their student and then walk with us to lunch after.

The book fair is open at this time also if grandparents want to take their kiddos, they can take students after lunch and should bring students back to our classroom no later than 11:45.

Our spelling words this week are:

pin
out
win
hit
sit
lip
very
dip

Our weekly sight words are:
down
very
up
out

Here is a great website where students can practice sight words.  The words will be slightly different than our weekly words but the games are interactive and fun for students!
This is another link for some great sight word practice games.
Your student has their sight word list to practice in their folders tonight (Tuesday).  These are words that will be coming up in our books and will help them to become stronger readers by working on these words (and continuing to the next list of words when they finish).

We will take a spelling test on Friday for review of our spelling words so you'll be seeing this in folders on Friday.

If you have any questions please email me any time!  elizabeth.long@Fayette.kyschools.us

Tuesday September 5

Good afternoon families!

We're off and learning so much in our class!  This week we are beginning to work on words with a short A.  You'll notice on students folder page we have spelling words this week.  We will be taking a practice spelling test on Friday.  In addition to practicing words during word work, please review the short a words at home nightly so students will do their best on their spelling test Friday.

In comprehension we're learning about things we do at school and schools around the world.  In writing we are writing about things that we love to prepare for our personal narratives we will begin soon.  In language we are learning about COPS (capitalization, organization, punctuation and spelling) and how we use COPS in writing to make complete sentences.

In math, we have been focusing on ways to make 5 and are moving into ways to make 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Students are learning about Reading Horizons (this can also be accessed at home if you would like!)

Students are buddy reading.

Our spelling words this week are:

We will have 6 spelling words each week and 2 sight words that are words from our sight word list for the week.

We will be beginning word work tomorrow in class so students will begin working on sight words and spelling words at school as well.

If you haven't already send in $6 for supplies, please send that in.  Wellington purchased students journals for different subjects and each student has 3 journals that have primary ruled writing so they are great for our students use!

Have a wonderful week!
